Our fledgling community vegetable patch in Reeth is now packed with fresh veg and herbs that are available for anyone to pick and eat.
It was a difficult start to the ‘growing season’, with the Covid lockdown inconveniently arriving just when we should have been getting the first seeds sown. However, as things opened up again, we jumped on the opportunity to get seedlings planted, and a warm and damp July has done wonders for them!
So, a few details for anyone who is interested in contributing the garden, or who would like to reap the produce.
Where is it?
It’s by the side of the GP’s surgery in Reeth, to the right hand side of the building as you look at it. Feel free to go and have a look – don’t be shy!
There is parking available at the surgery, but please avoid using this while the surgery is open, and take care to follow current Covid precautions.
What can I do?
You can do as much or as little as you like, without asking permission from anybody. It’s a community garden, so it really needs the community to get stuck in and make use of it. This includes:
- Planting new seedlings or seeds, if there is some space available.
- Doing a bit of weeding or other general maintenance.
- Watering the beds, especially on warm days.
There is a trowel, handfork and watering can available at the beds so you don’t need to take anything along.
Can I take some vegetables?
Yes – that’s the whole idea. Feel free to pick anything that is ready and take it home to eat. Again, you don’t need to ask permission. What we really want to avoid is any of that lovely fresh produce going to waste, so please don’t feel any guilt about helping yourself.
